Genere di [[videogioco]] che è la diretta trasposizione su video dell'omonimo tipo di giochi di società capitanati dal noto "//Dungeon & Dragons//". 

Nei **giochi di ruolo** per [[home computer]] l'utente controlla un gruppo di personaggi con differenti caratteristiche individuali complementari, definite in genere da parametri numerici (es. "Forza 15, Saggezza 4, Simpatia 9") che possono variare nel corso della partita. 

Gli avventurieri si spostano su interi continenti con complesse caratteristiche geologiche che influiscono sulle loro capacità di spostamento, dove possono visitare città e vari ambienti (miniere, [[labirinto|labirinti]], castelli, ecc.) popolati da creature amichevoli od ostili con le quali si può interagire verbalmente, commerciando o combattendo. 

I combattimenti sono solitamente molto numerosi e dettagliati, e permettono di ottenere informazioni e oggetti che aiutano a raggiungere lo scopo finale del gioco (salvare qualcuno, risolvere un mistero, ecc.); L'esperienza acquisita negli scontri migliora inoltre le capacità dei personaggi.
